How to Avoid Moving Scams in California

Customer verifying a licensed California moving company before booking

Verify the Mover Before You Book

For a household move within California, confirm that the company name, phone number, address, and CAL-T license match official records. A USDOT number alone does not prove that a company has authority to perform your specific move.

Get a Written Estimate

The estimate should identify the mover, addresses, date, crew, pricing method, minimum time, travel terms, and important charges. Do not rely only on a verbal price or text message.

Watch for Common Red Flags

  • Pressure to pay a large deposit immediately
  • No verifiable license or business identity
  • A price dramatically below every other estimate
  • Refusal to provide written terms
  • Requests to sign blank or incomplete documents
  • A different company name appearing on moving day

Ask Direct Questions

Ask what is included, how time is calculated, whether double drive time applies, what coverage is provided, and which items are outside the mover’s scope.

Protect Your Records

Keep the estimate, inventory, photos, messages, payment receipts, and signed documents. iBox Moving can be verified under CAL-T #203561 and USDOT #3875328.
